Is OpenGL good at Volumn Rendering?

Just feel interested in this topic, want to
find a project for my 3D graphic course.
Any one know anything about 3D texture? I
heard it came with the later version (V1.3?),
Do I need to buy a newer red book? I have 1.1
    though.

    Any one have any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    3d texture are 1.2 specs.

Ati Radeon256 will support 3d texture.

I also heard that the GeForce does, but I didn't look into it so I am really not sure
