A horrible newbie question: What is a fragment?

Is it a synonym for a pixel?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: A horrible newbie question: What is a fragment?

    From the Red Book's glossary:

    fragment

Fragments are generated by the rasterization of the primitives. Each fragment corresponds to a single pixel and includes color, depth, and sometimes texture-coordinate values.

    Hope that helps.
