GPU compatibility question. HIS H695F2G2M Radeon HD 6950

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161355

Everything I researched pointed towards this being a fully opencl 1.1 compatible gpu. My research also assured me that there are the appropriate drivers for Ubuntu/Debian. I could not find any information that assured me this gpu is fully compatible, is it? I want to really make sure this is what I want especially if I am going to put out the almost 600 dollars on two of them.

Has any one had any experience working with this gpu or with HIS graphics cards in general? Is it a good company?

I also do not know any thing about OpenCL releases and versioning. I am just starting with it. I know that I am asking for a best estimate so I wont hold the answer against any one if its off. If this gpu does function with the latest version of OpenCL can any one give me a best guess as to how long this gpu will be supported? How long will this gpu be current with OpenCL releases?(please feel free to speculate)

Thank You, =)
James Andino

Hi James,

the GPU you’re looking at is an AMD Radeon HD6950 and as such supports OpenCL 1.1 using AMD’s Stream SDK (see http://developer.amd.com/gpu/AMDAPPSDK/ … ility.aspx).
As far as I know, this is one of AMD’s new high-end GPUs, so you can expect AMD to support it for quite a while.

I don’t know anything about that particular model of the HD6950, because I’ve never heard of HIS before.

Cheers
Dominik

Thank you for your response. I fully suspected that it was supported I just wanted feedback that it was. 700 dollars is quite the investment for a college student ; )

Now only if the colleges where teaching this stuff.

::cheers::

Hi,

Several Universities have started teaching OpenCL. AMD has just released a University curriculum, which perhaps you could suggest to your college.

HAHAHAHAHAHA I do not mean to laugh but I thats not going to happen any time soon by me. The fine state of NJ believes in education how it was, not is.

I have to say though it is nice that the people who read books get the interviews. I am not sure I would want to change that.

Yes though I do support you guys and I will recommend it. I have already gone through the package on my own ; )

I ended up buying this card and wanted to recommend it to any one else who happens across here. One really great thing was the ease of driver installation on Ubuntu and Debian. (of course all that is really chip specific )

As for the other thing, the teaching openCL at my University. They where very open to the idea. Of course I am apparently going to be giving the demo…
