    3d models

    Hi,

I wonder if someone could share a bit on the topic of creating models (to be used in OpenGL) using some modeling tool.

I tried Blender to create some simple stuff and wrote a wave-front parser. I spent some days on this, but Blender is quite complicated. Maybe I just need to put more time into it...

Is this the way forward? Is it possible to configure blender to export directly into a custom format? How does Collada come into the picture?

What are my options? I feel a bit lost here and would appreciate some guidance.

    Thanks
    /P

Some posts from the archives that pertain to this:

    * which is Best 3D model file to learn and use. (Nov 2011)
    * Opinions on 3D model File Formats (Aug 2011)
    * Display a complex mesh in openGL (July 2011)

    * Need help with 3D models: recomended formats? (Nov 2010)
    * convert 3d model to ms3d and load via OpenGL in C (May 2010)
    ...

(For more hits, just click the "Search" button up above and search for "blender")

In short, it depends on what you're needs are.

Is it possible to configure blender to export directly into a custom format?
Use the integrated Python scripting. Check this out:
    * Skeletal Animation (Sept 2009)
    * Blender, OpenGl, effects & models (Aug 2009)

Also, a few of the above-linked posts talk about doing this.

And an OpenGL wiki entry on this, just for completeness:
    * What 3D file format should I use? (OpenGL Wiki)

In games (like for example battelfield), how are the worlds/maps created?

    I found this...
