Is there a way to export custom Maya nodes with animation? If not is it planned?

Another option would be for somebody to make the change in the exporter and submit the patch ?

That’s correct. We accept all user patches that we believe will be useful to other users. If you or someone else wants to implement the export or both the export and import of custom nodes, using the <extra> element, we’ll gladly integrate your patch.
